Sean Taro Ono Lennon was born in New York City on 9 October 1975, the son of Yoko Ono and John Lennon. Musician, composer and producer, he grew within an intensely public family history but gradually built a career defined by psychedelic rock, chamber pop, improvisation and collaboration.
Growing inside a public story
John Lennon was murdered when Sean was five. Personal grief became inseparable from global memory and media attention. Yoko Ono protected and encouraged his education while involving him selectively in music. Any assessment of his work must acknowledge inheritance without treating it as the only source of identity.
First recordings
Sean appeared on family projects and worked with artists including Cibo Matto before releasing Into the Sun in 1998. The album’s shifting arrangements and melodic detail established an interest in studio experimentation rather than replication of his father’s style.
Later solo work, including Friendly Fire, joined carefully produced songs with autobiographical themes and visual storytelling.
The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger
With Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Lennon formed The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, often shortened to the GOASTT. Folk intimacy expanded into psychedelic rock through layered guitars, unusual instruments and surreal lyrics. Partnership made the project distinct from a conventional solo vehicle.
Claypool Lennon Delirium
His collaboration with Primus bassist Les Claypool created the Claypool Lennon Delirium. Complex rhythm, satirical writing and progressive-rock structures gave Sean space to play guitar and keyboards within a deliberately strange ensemble.
Producer and custodian of memory
Lennon has produced recordings for other artists and worked with Yoko Ono’s catalogue. Stewardship of family archives requires balancing preservation, reinterpretation and commercial pressure. It is a cultural responsibility distinct from making his own music.
