Eugenio González Derbez was born in Mexico City on 2 September 1961. Actor, comedian, writer, director and producer, he built some of Mexican television’s most familiar characters before creating Spanish-language box-office success and developing an international film career.
A family connected to performance
His mother was actress Silvia Derbez and his father publicist Eugenio González Salas. Exposure to performance did not remove the need for training and persistence. Derbez studied acting and later film direction, learning both the visible and technical sides of production.
Characters and television
Programmes including Al derecho y al derbez, Derbez en cuando and XHDRBZ combined sketches, parody and recurring figures. Characters such as Ludovico P. Luche and the teacher Aarón Abasolo exaggerated language and social behaviour until they became part of popular speech.
